Purchasing a custom bike can be a complicated process. Awesome, yes. But still overwhelming at times. There are simply so many things to decide upon. When buying a car you decide upon the model, color, and maybe 4 or 5 trim levels. A custom bicycle, on the other hand, has an almost infinite number of variables.

Just building up a set of wheels to go with your bike will require you to decide upon the hub, rim, spokes, spoke lacing, spoke count, spoke nipple type, tire style and size. It can get rather absurd.

One of the many benefits of living in Austin, is that the winters are generally mild. We certainly complain a lot on our rare below freezing days, but at the back of our mind most Texans are well aware that we've got it pretty easy. Purpose built commuter bikes are elusive things. They come and go, each lauded as the perfect solution for the urban commuter. Kickstarter is awash with start-ups who each think that they’ve cracked the code.

What we’ve always worried about with these one off designs, is the day to day durability. If a bike is truly made for urban commuting, it needs to handle quite a bit of abuse. We've just received this beautiful, single speed Trek Superfly 29er. With a thru-axle, rigid fork, Shimano brakes and one of the coolest paint jobs we've seen in a while, this bike has skyrocketed to the top of the employee want list.

Bike racks have come a long way in the past few years. Gone are the days of constantly starring into your rearview mirror and tightening straps every time you stop your car. Today’s racks are simple, effective holders that make transporting your bike easy and secure. One of our favorites is the Kuat Sherpa. We love it because it solves several problems.
