The Violet Crown Mellow Wheeling Ride

This is one of the oldest group rides in Austin meeting every Sunday morning for over 30 years! We are honored to take Freewheeling's responsibilities.

The Sunday Violet Crown Ride is less intense than the Saturday VC Ride, but still a speedy group ride.  This ride is a great fit for the intermediate rider with good fitness who is accustomed to riding in groups. This co-ed ride averages 17-18mph for 50-60 miles. Riders for this group should have experience riding in groups and understand the etiquette of group riding, be able to change a tire and address minor mechanical issues. Riders should come expecting a challenging road ride and bring the proper equipment. Please don't wear headphones or bring tri-bars on a group ride. We typically ride out against the wind and have a tailwind on the way home as nature intended. Speaking of nature, expect one "nature break" around 20 miles into the ride, and one store stop around the mid-point of the ride.

Wheels down at 8:15am.

Route:  routes will vary.

Pace: 17-18 mph for 50-60 miles. Moderate pace with some stops, but it is not a "no drop" ride.

What you need to bring:  road bike, clipless pedals, helmet, bike in good working condition, the experience and tools to change your own flats, water and nutrition. Please no headphones/radios.  We encourage you to ride your bike down to the shop.  If you do drive, please park in the street.  For pre-ride coffee or snack, meet at Juan Pelota Café a half hour before ride time.

Love Letter to a Moots VAMOOTS RSL

Date: February 13, 2013 @ 3:36 pm
Location:

‘No single part is best,
For each in its way is a solace

And if the Whole enthralls,
Is any detail the seducer?

She dazzles like the dawn and like the
darkness consoles me;

-excerpt from Altogether, by Baudelaire, as translated by Richard Howard

My Dearest VAMOOTS RSL,

I don’t know if this note will ever find you, or if these words will mean anything at all.   I sit here now, on the edge of the world, listening to the bumpbump… of my heart and wondering just what I can do to deserve you.  What I feel here is beyond…  beyond these words and the contrived conventions of society…  If I could paint or draw, perhaps.

If I was a better man.

I’ve been training now for so long.  Suffering through races and cursing my lack of talent.  Pedal Hard Training Center at 6am.  100 milers in the rain.  Even commuting on the most miserable, bone chilling of days.  I’ve been eating kale salads and raw almonds, shaving my legs with the most exotic oils and forgoing any type of upper body exercise whatsoever.

I need you...  Each day with my soulless carbon bike is an eternity.  The romance and history of this sport I love dampened like so much road vibration.  I need something that responds to me.  Something that makes me more than who I am!

And I know about NAHBS and your sister, Psychlo X RSL, winning Best Cyclocross Bike and all of those things that happened in 2012.  It’s OK…  Those fair weather friends can lust after her, or the hottest new thing until something flashier comes along.  They didn’t deserve you anyway.  To me you’re not just a set of decals and amazing welds.  It’s every bit of you, working as a unit to create something extraordinary.  The 6/4 seamless seat stays and press fit bottom bracket are simply incredible.  And now I’m seeing pictures of you in the new SRAM Red!

You’re in the shop now, so close, yet forever away.  And I see others handling you as I’m working…  Picking you up with their pawing hands (as if weight was the only determining factor)!  Well, I’m looking for a lifetime commitment. Not some 2 year fling.  These are the ones that will put you on E-bay or Craig’s list of forgotten things.  I can tell by the way they put you back on your display rack.  You cannot trust them.

Just wait for me, please…  I may not be a rich man, but I’ll love you more than those orthodontists or venture capitalists ever could.  I’ll use only the finest cables and housing, the most luxurious bar tape, the lightest components and deepest wheels.  We get paid three times in March, and my tax return is coming back.  My change jar is getting pretty darn full and I’m thinking of returning some stuff I got from Target—I kept my receipt.

It’s all for you, my darling VAMOOTS RSL.  It is all for you.

XOXOXO,

Thomas

Fuel Your Rides

Location:

Fueling Up on the Bike
By: Lauren Ziedonis

You have a bike, you've been riding, and are ready to test out longer distances...perhaps try a group ride or even register for the BP MS150. Before you commit to a full day of riding, don't forget to bring fuel and hydration on your journey!

Your body needs calories to regulate temperature, to keep your heart, brain and lungs working, and to fuel your legs to power through. The cliche "you are what you eat" rings true. Based on my stupidity and experiences as a mountain bike racer, this is where I make most of my mistakes. Sometimes it's not the strength, endurance, mental focus, bike weight, or even technical skills keeping you from your best. It's about feeding yourself properly and timely.

Everyone is different, your nutrition needs will differ from day to day. In general, eating and drinking on the bike goes like this:

  • Drink one bottle of water per hour on the bike. Bring more than you think you should. When you get tired or get a break at a stop light- Drink!

  • Drink more water than electrolyte mix. You need both, but more water is better.

  • Eat about 100 calories per hour on the bike.

  • Gels, gummies, bars and Snickers are more easily digested than fried chicken or a cheeseburger super sized. Our muscles use glycogen first to function. When glycogen runs out, protein gets used next. Proteins are muscles being burned for fuel, that's not the best source.

  • Sports drinks with electrolytes will help balance and replenish all that has been sweated out. If you get leg cramps you will have to find the right sports drink or electrolyte tabs to keep your legs moving.

Mellow Johnny's stocks up on Nuun, Hammer, Skratch, CLIF, Eload, Enervit, First Endurance, FRS, Honey Stinger, Cambelback Hydration, Acelerade, and Gu products. Come by and fuel up.
