Scout-a-Route Ride: Southern Culture (off the grid)
Date: March 3, 2012 @ 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Location: - Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop
400 Nueces
Austin, Texas
This 18-mile route takes us south of downtown via Bouldin, rolling through the Emerald Forest to South 1st Street and back.
These rides are co-hosted by Mellow Johnny’s and the Austin Cycling Association. This no-drop, co-ed group ride is perfect for the cyclist new to riding or bike commuting, returning to the bike or just looking for a more casual ride. The routes are designed to help riders navigate the city bike routes and other safe bike commuting options.
Thank you for making this a popular Saturday morning ride. In response, we are now hosting two groups for this ride. The first group is designed for those who can average 14-16mph for 20-30 miles with one or two regrouping points. This group follows the same route but is provided with an extended mileage option.
The second group is our traditional Scout-a-route. We average 12mph for distances between 15-25 miles with regrouping points.
Both rides are intended to explore, so leave your heart rate monitor at home, bring some spare dollars for the occasional refreshment stop and enjoy the view.
General group ride expectation: helmet, bike in good working condition, water and nutrition, flat changing tools, and no headphones/radios. We encourage you to ride your bike to the ride but if you are driving, please, park in the street.
For pre-ride coffee or snack, meet at Juan Pelota Café a half hour before ride time.

Cycling Community's Chat with the Chief
Date: March 5, 2012 @ 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Location: Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop
400 Nueces St
Chief Acevedo has more than two decades of law enforcement experience and a long history of community outreach, and the cycling community has benefited from this commitment to coalition building.
Soon after Chief Acevedo arrived in Austin, he agreed to take part in a public forum in which he would answer for issues, real and perceived, between cyclists and the police department. All topics were open for discussion, including ticket stings, untrained patrol officers and response at crash sites. The first forum, in 2009, was a watershed in relations with the APD, and the following annual events have proved to be the public catalyst for implementing a variety of initiatives.
The 2012 forum format will be changing to reflect the community partnership as it stands today. It will begin with a meet-and-greet social time before the formal presentation. APD will present updates on several projects including statistics of interest, bike registration program, bike light giveaways and ticket remediation classes. The question and answer portion will follow.
In order to get researched answers, please submit questions in advance to apdforum@austincycling.org

But as fresh-faced cyclists fill the roads, they also encounter their share of frustrations—careless drivers, wide-flung car doors, zoned-out pedestrians, and aggressive fellow cyclists, to name a few. In this follow-up to the best-selling Bike Snob, BikeSnobNYC takes on the trials and triumphs of bike commuting with snark, humor, and enthusiasm, asking the question: If we become better commuters, will that make us better people? From the deadly sins of biking to tacticsfor dealing with cars, pedestrians, and other cyclists, this primer on bike travel is a must-read for cyclists new and season
