2013 Cyclocross Selection

Race. Ride. Commute.

Over the last few years the sport of cyclocross has taken off in Texas. We’re in the heart of the development of the racing action and Austin was awarded the 2015 National Championships to take place at Zilker Park. For those that haven’t witnessed the sport, picture short spectator friendly laps, with dismounts, obstacles and running with the bike that thrill fans and push racers into anaerobic debt.

Depending on who you ask you will hear a cyclocross bike is part road and mountain bike. Given the early 1900′s origins a cross bike resembles a road bike with some modifications but the bikes certainly have benefited from the development of mountain bikes. The wheelbase a bit longer than a standard road bike for more stability and the tire clearance is increased to handle the larger volume tires. Next, a cyclocross bike uses a taller bottom bracket to help keep the pedals from striking the ground, as well as often using smaller gearing, and disc or cantilever brakes to help wheel removal (wider tires) and mud build up in racing applications. Other nuances include cable routing designed to be out of the way of mud, debris, and your shoulders during running dismounts. Overall you get a bike that can handle a wider range of conditions and one that makes you a more confident rider, no matter the circumstances.

Whether you chose to race, or just enjoy the fun of riding, Austin is a place that is blessed with ample urban green space that is perfect for a cyclocross bike. The ability to jump on a cyclocross bike and connect to dirt paths and trails around Austin via the pavement gives you a bike that fill a need when you cannot decide pavement or dirt. With the versatility they offer cyclocross bikes make great commuting solutions as well–curbs, dirt paths, broken pavement are all a part of what commuters endure and having a bike that can handle it all is one reason so many commuters have come to count on their cross bikes.

Live It

Our staff love, own, and most of all ride cyclocross bikes for fun, to commute, and to race. When he’s not on our sales floor Will Black lives and breathes cyclocross. As a bronze medal finisher at the Cyclocross World Championships in the Masters category Will was chosen as the lone Texas member of the new Trek Cyclocross Collective and will race in Texas and at select national events. Hear about just why Will loves cyclocross and get to know him better HERE.  On the service side, stop in and say hi to Charlie Gray, who uses his cyclocross bike as his commuting/do-it-all machine, or Jason Smith who also loves all things bikes including cyclocross.
